The Performer and Stress
As everyone knows, stress and anxiety to create all sorts of chemical reactions in our bodies. It is only exacerbated ten times if you have an A-type personality and a hundred times if you are a A-type artistic performer.
Before going into an audition, a shooting or a stage performance most artists go through an absolute wild ride of emotions and reactions. Back stage, it is absolutely electrifying and tense, you can cut with a knife. This is also true for the rock band about to go on stage, an actor or coming onto the set.
This “zone” of extreme emotions, vulnerability and pumping adrenaline which is brought down to depths of the body in order to give life exaggerated the performance.
Chemical reactions in our body
One of the reactions of the body that takes place in this area is the famous fight or flight response that is what produces hormones such as epinephrine and cortisol. Whether a two-or three-hour rock concert or an actor waiting all day to make a scene, the body must remain in that state of alarm for long periods of time to meet requirements of the show.
This, in turn, releases abundant chemical reactions in the body including, but not limited to, the over-production of adrenal hormones and an overflow of acids in the stomach.
These acids cause disruption of digestion, and as a serious irritation and damage to the intestinal wall and villi. And for this reason that most performers and suffer an endless list of the stomach and intestinal disorders. All of a simple nervous ulcers in the stomach, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis and even more serious diseases like Crohn’s-just to name a few.
Some performers use over the medicines against a multitude of prescriptions, and even illegal drugs to keep their stress levels in check and try to control their body reaction to pressure.
